The Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team had three grapplers advance to the gold round of the Las Vegas Robertson Invitational this weekend.
Jodi Cull-Host, Cory Geyer and Diego Madrid were all solid on day one of the two-day tournament and got to compete in the top bracket of double-elimination competition Saturday.
The tournament was hosted by Robertson, a longtime top-shelf program in New Mexico.
Most of the rest of the team advanced to the silver bracket Saturday. One of the only two Hilltoppers that didn’t advance Saturday was Brian Geyer, who is still suffering the effects of a knee injury and was held out of day two competition as a safety measure.
“(Friday), we had some kids in some really cruddy pools,” Los Alamos head coach Bob Geyer said. “Overall, it was a pretty good outing. It was a tough tournament again, close to the Joe Vivian. If you go .500 there, you’re doing pretty good.”
Cory Geyer was the farthest-advancing Hilltopper on the weekend, getting all the way to the championship semifinals before dropping his final two contests. Both those losses came when Geyer was leading, but he got himself in less-than-ideal body position during the bouts, which ultimately cost him.
Friday, Geyer went 3-0 individually to advance to the championship bracket.
