Los Alamos Hilltopper head coach Eric Sorenson was reasonably pleased with his team’s first outing of the season Wednesday.
The Hilltoppers went 11-5 on the mat against a pair of teams Wednesday at Bernalillo, although because his squad was missing five weight classes in duals with Bernalillo’s Spartans and West Las Vegas’ Dons, the team scores suffered.
Los Alamos split with Bernalillo in eight bouts, going 4-4. Against the Spartans, three of Los Alamos’ top wrestlers won their contests while the fourth, Kory Nelson, was idle.
Paul Martinez knocked off Kevin Tenorio at 112 pounds, 4-0, Zak Wilde pinned Dion Tenorio at 160 pounds and Blaine Lattin held off Joe Calabaza at 189 pounds, winning 5-0.
Also against Bernalillo, Gary Thorne scored a pin in an exhibition contest at 171 pounds.
Los Alamos topped West Las Vegas 7-1 on the mat Wednesday, going 4-1 in regular competition and 3-0 in exhibition contests.
Martinez and Lattin both won, as did and Alejandro (Nico) Mendez and Nelson.
Mendez scored a reversal with less than 15 seconds remaining in the third period to nip Matthew Trujillo 7-5, while Nelson scored a 5-0 win over Ross Valdez.
Lattin won by decision over Esteban Rivera and Martinez pinned Amanda De La Garza.
