The formula at the District 2AAAA wrestling tournament is pretty simple: win and you’re in, lose and you’re out.
Los Alamos’ wrestlers, along with the other four district teams’ wrestlers will get their shot to do just that Saturday.
The 2011 district meet will start at 9:30 a.m. This year’s tournament is being hosted by Capital High School.
Saturday’s district tournament will be the first one for 2AAAA newcomer Santa Fe and Hilltopper head coach Bob Geyer thinks the Demons might just be the team to beat.
And while Geyer said it would be great to be in the hunt for a team district title this season, the focus is more on getting wrestlers qualified for next week’s state championship tournament.
The district tournament, for teams around the state, is their one and only opportunity to get wrestlers into the state tournament, which will be held Feb. 18 in Rio Rancho. Last season, the Hilltoppers took six wrestlers to the Class 4A title meet.
In 2AAAA, the top three wrestlers in each weight class advance to the state title meet. Geyer said he feels good about his wrestlers’ chances but none of them can get too comfortable.
Los Alamos will be without its 103-pounder, Jodi Cull-Host, who was invited to a national qualifying tournament this weekend.
