There were few surprises one way or the other for the Los Alamos Hilltopper wrestling team in its first outing of the 2010-11 season.
The Hilltoppers opened up their campaign Saturday at the Manzano Invitational in Albuquerque, a singles tournament with some tough customers from around northern New Mexico taking part.
Los Alamos earned one medal in the varsity bracket Saturday and fell just one match short of a second after putting a limited number of entries into the main draw. The team also picked up a first place and a second place junior varsity finish.
“For the most part, they wrestled well,” Los Alamos head coach Robert Geyer said. “A couple of our guys went 2-and-out. We knew that, but we had to throw a few of our younger guys into the varsity tournament to get them some mat time.”
Once again, the Hilltoppers are starting several youngsters, but the coaching staff has hope things can get rolling by the end of the season.
Cory Geyer finished third for the Hilltoppers at 152 pounds Saturday. Geyer, one of the team’s captains, advanced to the semifinals before falling to Anthony Abeyta of Santa Fe, one of the wrestlers on the short list of Class AAAA championship contenders.
Geyer bounced back in the consolation final to take the third slot in his weight class.
