LAHS: AD releases contingency plans for Cernicek Invite

By The Staff

Things are still progressing at Sullivan Field, although not as quickly as Los Alamos High School’s athletic department was hoping.
Workers from Academy Sports Turf of Englewood, Colo., began laying down the new artificial surface at Sullivan Field this weekend and as of Monday had much of the football playing area on the ground.
However, the renovation at Sullivan Field, which began in mid-May and was scheduled to wrap up on or about Aug. 18, has fallen well behind schedule.
Now, LAHS’ athletic department announced late last week, it is entirely possible the field won’t be ready in time for the Louie Cernicek Invitational boys soccer tournament. Los Alamos athletic director Vicki Nelms said, as it now stands, all home soccer games through Sept. 7 are likely to have to be played in White Rock, a date which includes the Cernicek tournament which runs Sept. 2-3.
The tournament, which has been played at Sullivan Field every year since 1997 and includes top teams from around the state, is one of the biggest events Los Alamos hosts during the school year.
Not only would playing the tournament in White Rock likely hurt attendance, but the school generally doesn’t charge admission for sporting events not held at Sullivan Field or Griffith Gymnasium — the soccer fields in White Rock are owned and maintained by Los Alamos County.
In the event Sullivan Field isn’t ready to go by the first round of the Cernicek tournament Sept. 2, most of the tournament games would be played on Dara Jones Field at Overlook Park. Right now, all but one game of the tournament is scheduled for Sullivan Field, including the Hilltoppers’ opening round contest against the Goddard Rockets.
The Hilltopper boys soccer teams starts its season Thursday at home against Rio Rancho. Also that day, the Hilltopper girls soccer team will host Moriarty. Both those games will be played at Dara Jones Field, with the boys game starting at 4 p.m. and the girls game at 6 p.m.
For the Cernicek tournament, Los Alamos-Goddard and a first-round game pitting Roswell against Pierdra Vista will be played at Dara Jones Field, while Belen-Bernalillo and Farmington-Clovis games will be played at the Paul Spirio Complex, also at Overlook Park.
Of the remaining contests in the tournament, all but the fifth- and seventh-place games would be played at Dara Jones Field.
