Winter Storm Warning begins at 11 a.m. this morning

Heavy snow is in the forecast for the Los Alamos area through Wednesday

The National Weather Service issued the following warning Tuesday morning:

WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 5 PM MST WEDNESDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBUQUERQUE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM THIS MORNING TO 5 PM MST WEDNESDAY. THE WINTER STORM WATCH IS NO LONGER IN EFFECT.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS... SNOW AMOUNTS OF 3 TO 6 INCHES CAN BE EXPECTED AT ELEVATIONS BELOW 7500 FEET... WHILE 6 TO 10 INCHES OF SNOW IS LIKELY ABOVE 7500 FEET. THE HEAVIEST ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST FACING SLOPES OF THE SAN JUAN AND JEMEZ MOUNTAINS.

* TIMING... SNOW WILL BEGIN LATE THIS MORNING... BUT WILL INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING. THE SNOW MAY BE HEAVY AT TIMES ESPECIALLY LATE TUESDAY NIGHT.

* WINDS... WIDESPREAD SIGNIFICANT WINDS ARE NOT EXPECTED.

* SNOW LEVELS... SNOW WILL PREVAIL AT ELEVATIONS ABOVE 7000 FEET... HOWEVER... LOCATIONS BELOW 7000 FEET MAY EXPERIENCE RAIN OR A MIX OF RAIN AND SNOW THIS AFTERNOON BEFORE CHANGING TO ALL SNOW THIS EVENING. TEMPERATURES WILL THEN REMAIN COLD ENOUGH FOR SNOW AT ALL ELEVATIONS THROUGH WEDNESDAY.

* LOCAL IMPACTS... HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE NORTHWEST MOUNTAINS AND ADJACENT HIGHLANDS. VISIBILITIES MAY BE REDUCED TUESDAY NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY MORNING AS SNOW INTENSITY INCREASES. ROADWAYS MAY BECOME SNOW PACKED AND ICY FOR HOLIDAY TRAVELERS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A WINTER STORM WARNING FOR HEAVY SNOW MEANS SEVERE WINTER WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED OR OCCURRING. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNTS OF SNOW ARE FORECAST THAT WILL MAKE TRAVEL DANGEROUS. ONLY TRAVEL IN AN EMERGENCY. IF YOU MUST TRAVEL... KEEP AN EXTRA FLASHLIGHT... FOOD... AND WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL AMOUNTS ARE LIKELY ACROSS PORTIONS OF NORTHERN AND WESTERN NEW MEXICO LATE THIS MORNING THROUGH EARLY THURSDAY. SNOW WILL BEGIN ACROSS THE HIGHER TERRAIN OF THE NORTHWEST MOUNTAINS TODAY AS A STRONG UPPER LEVEL LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM DIVES INTO ARIZONA. SNOW LEVELS WILL DROP TO THE SURFACE TONIGHT AS SNOW SPREADS SOUTH AND EAST AND INCREASES IN INTENSITY. SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DIMINISH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON ACROSS WESTERN NEW MEXICO... BUT WILL LINGER INTO THURSDAY MORNING ACROSS THE SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS.
