While driving home at about 9 p.m. Thursday night, Fred Devries, 60, and his wife Hazel of White Rock were hit nearly head-on by a man suspected of driving drunk on N.M. 4.
Noel Martinez, 36, of Espanola was arrested on suspicion of Aggravated DWI and Reckless Driving. His blood alcohol content was allegedly two-and-a-half-times the legal limit, according to police.
Los Alamos County DWI Planning Council Coordinator David Sims and his wife, Marthe, are good friends of the Devries and visited Hazel in the hospital in Santa Fe Sunday.
“Hazel’s whole face is black and blue,” Sims said. “The Los Alamos Fire Department had to use the Jaws of Life to get her out of the car. They transported her to the Los Alamos Medical Center following the accident. She was later taken to Santa Fe for more tests. She may have to have surgery on her back.”
Sims said the couple was on their way home from Espanola and driving around the curve toward White Rock when they met Martin coming the wrong way in their lane.
