The Los Alamos Fencing Club sent its top three fencers to the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas, Nev., earlier this month.
The Duel in the Desert is one of the top epee events in the U.S. and attracts fencers from across the nation.
In the Senior Men’s Epee event, Patrick Webb was Los Alamos’ top finisher, taking 29th out of 66 entrants.
Webb was eliminated in the round of 32 by Eric Hansen, fencing coach at UCLA and the Los Angles International Fencing Centre, in a hard-fought bout that ended at 15-13.
Hansen, one of the Nation’s top epeeists, has been a frequent member of the U.S. team competing in the World Cup Championships.
For Webb, the finish at Las Vegas earned him a USFA D2012 ranking.
“Patrick led Hansen thru the first two periods and certainly gave him a serious run for his money,” LAFC coach Tom Hill said. “To fence toe-to-toe with a fencer of Hansen’s caliber is quite a feather in Patrick’s cap.”
In that same event, Hill finished 52nd, while local epeeist Jack Stafurik was 58th.
In the Veteran Men’s Combined Epee, Hill came in 25th and Stafurik was 38th.
