Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls basketball teams will be in action tonight against the Volcano Vista Hawks.
The Hilltopper boys team will travel to Albuquerque to face the Hawks, the first meeting between the two teams in Albuquerque. The Volcano Vista girls, meanwhile, will be making their first trip to Los Alamos tonight when they face the Hilltoppers.
Volcano Vista High School, located on the extreme west side of Albuquerque, opened just three years ago. The two schools had their first meetings in basketball last season with Los Alamos' teams winning both contests.
Volcano Vista is a Class AAAA school — giving added importance to both of tonight's contests — but will graduate to Class 5A following this academic year.
The Hilltopper boys (11-3) topped Goddard and Valencia at the Poe Corn Invitational Tournament last week, but fell in the tournament semifinal to Roswell. They finished third overall in the Poe Corn.
Austin Wolstein dropped in a game-high 24 points in the third-place game against Goddard Thursday night, while Alex Kirk posted his third triple-double of the season (19 points, 13 rebounds, 10 blocked shots).
Los Alamos has won five of its last six games, including impressive victories over Grants and Pojoaque in the Ben Lujan Tournament in late December.
Meanwhile, the Hilltopper girls won two of three contests at the Goddard Holiday Classic last week, knocking off Goddard and Ruidoso on consecutive days to take third place overall in the six-team tournament.
At Goddard, Hilltopper forward Taylor Ealey was named to the All-Tournament team, scoring in double-digits in all three games for the Hilltoppers.
With the two wins Los Alamos upped its record to 6-6, only the second time this season it has been at the .500 mark.
Volcano Vista's boys currently field a mark of 5-5, while the Hawk girls are 3-6 overall.
