WEATHER ALERT: Strong storm system targets Los Alamos area Sunday

The National Weather Service issued the following watch advisory early Saturday morning:

A WINTER STORM WATCH IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN ALBUQUERQUE HAS ISSUED A WINTER STORM WATCH... WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM SUNDAY MORNING THROUGH LATE SUNDAY NIGHT.

* SNOW ACCUMULATIONS... SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED... ESPECIALLY ALONG THE PEAKS AND EASTERN SLOPES OF THE SOUTHERN SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS WHERE UPWARDS OF A FOOT OF NEW SNOWFALL IS EXPECTED.

* TIMING... SNOW WILL SPREAD EASTWARD INTO THE MOUNTAINS SUNDAY AND WILL CONTINUE INTO SUNDAY NIGHT. BY EARLY MONDAY MORNING SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DECREASE IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY WITH ONLY LIGHT SHOWERS LINGERING INTO THE DAY MONDAY.

* WINDS... WIDESPREAD SIGNIFICANT WINDS ARE NOT EXPECTED AT THIS TIME.

* SNOW LEVELS... SNOW LEVELS WILL RANGE BETWEEN 7000 AND 8000 FEET SUNDAY AFTERNOON WITH LEVELS DROPPING DOWN TO 5500 TO 6500 FEET SUNDAY NIGHT.

* LOCAL IMPACTS... SNOW IS EXPECTED TO IMPACT TRAVEL DUE TO SNOW PACKED ROADWAYS AND REDUCED VISIBILITIES.

REMEMBER... A WINTER STORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR A HAZARDOUS WINTER WEATHER EVENT IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH AREA.

A STRONG LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL DIVE SOUTHEASTWARD TOWARD THE FOUR CORNERS AREA TONIGHT... SPREADING PRECIPITATION INTO THE NORTHWEST CORNER OF NEW MEXICO. THROUGH THE DAY SUNDAY THE STORM WILL CONTINUE TO PUSH SOUTHEASTWARD... AND PRECIPITATION WILL INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND INTENSITY. SNOWFALL WILL FAVOR THE HIGHER TERRAIN ABOVE 7000 TO 8000 FEET IN THE SAN JUAN... JEMEZ... WESTERN SAN MATEO... AND SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS ON SUNDAY WHERE SIGNIFICANT ACCUMULATIONS ARE EXPECTED. BY SUNDAY NIGHT SNOW LEVELS WILL LOWER... AND MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW WILL SPREAD INTO THE SANDIA... MANZANO... SACRAMENTO... AND CAPITAN MOUNTAINS OF CENTRAL AND SOUTH CENTRAL NEW MEXICO. SNOW WILL GRADUALLY TAPER OFF IN THE NORTHERN TIER OF THE STATE BY MONDAY... AND THE BULK OF THE PRECIPITATION IS EXPECTED TO EXIT THE STATE TO THE SOUTHEAST BY MONDAY NIGHT.
