The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team didn’t survive the first day of the Class 4A playoffs Thursday.
Los Alamos was knocked out of direct-elimination play by its old foe, Santa Fe, in the first round Thursday afternoon. The loss ends the Hilltoppers’ season.
It was the second consecutive match between Los Alamos and Santa Fe and the second solid victory by the Demons. The Demons took the contest 25-18, 17-25, 25-14, 25-21.
Los Alamos finished third in the pool play round Thursday morning, in which it faced third-seeded Artesia and sixth-seeded Albuquerque Academy.
Academy actually upset Artesia for the No. 1 spot coming out of Pool C.
As such, the Chargers had a bye into Friday morning’s quarterfinal round.
Meanwhile, the Hilltoppers, with their third-place pool finish, met up with the Demons, who were the No. 2 finisher in Pool A.
The Demons went into the tournament on a roll. They swept Los Alamos in the semifinal of the District 2-4A tournament Nov. 8 and moved on to upset Española Valley 3-0 for the district tournament championship two nights later.
