The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team finished off the first half of its District 2AAAA season with a spotless record by knocking off Capital Wednesday night.
The Hilltoppers earned their fourth consecutive district sweep Wednesday at Capital, downing the Jaguars 3-0. That victory put the Hilltoppers at 4-0 on the district season (13-3 overall).
Los Alamos has won all four of its 2AAAA matches this season by way of sweep. It has lost just six games on its current nine-match winning streak and has lost just one game since Sept. 24.
With Wednesday’s victory, Los Alamos is firmly in control of the 2AAAA race. If Los Alamos can earn victories against Taos Saturday and Bernalillo Oct. 24 — it had little trouble with either squad in their first go-rounds — it will be within just two game victories of clinching its second consecutive regular season district title.
Capital (6-10 overall, 2-2 in 2AAAA) dropped to third place in the district standings with Wednesday’s loss.
It is one match behind Española Valley for second place, although Española Valley currently owns the tiebreaker between the two teams.
The Hilltoppers, meanwhile, are garnering respect around the state. In the new New Mexico High School Coaches’ Association poll, released Wednesday, the Hilltoppers are the second-ranked team in the state, behind the only Class AAAA team that has beaten them this season, Goddard (see the complete poll on page 9).
Los Alamos has just four more regular season contests on its schedule, the second round of 2AAAA play.
Los Alamos has won 11 of its last 12 district regular season matches spanning back to 2008.
