ALBUQUERQUE — It was within one point of being a comeback for the ages.
It had all the earmarkings of being a very short night for the Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team in its opener Wednesday at St. Pius X. Los Alamos dropped the first two sets to St. Pius’ Sartans and was within four points of being swept by the bigger and more experienced squad.
Instead, Los Alamos rallied in the third set to keep itself alive, rallied again late in the fourth set, fending off two match points and led 14-13 in the final set.
The last rally of the contest, however, would favor the Sartans.
The Sartans fended off match point in the final set and won three straight points to take Wednesday’s match 25-23, 25-18, 22-25, 24-26, 16-14.
Nevertheless, the young Hilltopper squad left Sartan Garden feeling pretty good about itself.
“That was one of the best games I’ve ever played,” Hilltopper Oksana Tretiak said afterward. “It was a great way to start the season. It would’ve been better if we’d won, but still, it was a good game.”
The Sartans (1-0) came out aggressively in the first two sets, getting good production out of its middles.
Sam Brown had five spike kills in the first set and Ashley Newman got hot in the second set, racking up nine spike kills.
