The Los Alamos Hilltopper volleyball team finished seventh in Class AAAA’s preseason poll.
The preseason poll, taken from a vote by head coaches throughout the state, was released by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association this morning.
Los Alamos’ seventh-place finish in the poll, in which it grabbed 42 total points, placed it just two points behind sixth-ranked Albuquerque Academy and 11 points ahead of Piedra Vista in the eighth slot.
The Hilltoppers will open their season Aug. 27 on the road at St. Pius X. St. Pius finished third in the preseason rankings.
The coaches voted 2007 Class AAAA champion Moriarty No. 1 heading into the 2008 season. State runner-up Roswell was voted fourth.
In 2007, Los Alamos finished 13-9 overall and won the District 2AAAA championship tournament, upending regular season champion Española Valley. Los Alamos would go on to stun Goddard in the state AAAA quarterfinals before falling to Roswell in the semis.
Here are the New Mexico High School Coaches Association’s Class AAAA and AAAAA preseason rankings. Not enough votes were received for other polls.
