Utilities crews begin Pueblo Canyon work

North Mesa residents of Sioux, Big Rock Loop and San Ildefonso roads may hear a pounding noise coming from Pueblo Canyon, as Department of Public Utilities crews begin work on a wastewater interceptor pipe this morning.

The work is slated for completion in late November. The project budget is $500,000 in monies from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The Pueblo Canyon Sewer Interceptor will replace 3,600 feet of 15-inch vitrified clay pipe, which is more than 40-years-old, with a new 18-inch polyethylene sewer line by pipe bursting (an underground method of pulling new pipe through existing pipe).

The pipe bursting method is responsible for the noise, which some nearby residents may hear if they are outside, Project Manager James Alarid said.

The Pueblo Canyon work, which will occur about a half mile east of the airport, will provide the community with additional wastewater capacity, eliminating vulnerability to flooding from extreme weather. Modeling of the existing sewer main showed it to be at capacity for existing conditions and undersized for future conditions.

The Los Alamos Department of Public Utilities is a public enterprise that provides county residents and organizations with natural gas, water, electric and wastewater services.
