Ev Griggs added to her impressive list of accolades Saturday at the Atomic City Invitational.
Griggs, top amateur local golfer, earned her record-tying ninth victory at the ACI, outlasting Anna Swertfeger in the women’s championship playoff Saturday at Los Alamos Golf Course. Griggs dropped a short par putt on the 18th hole to preserve a 1-up victory over Swertfeger to claim the 2010 title.
Swertfeger made a big chip followed by a 3-foot putt on the 17th hole to pull within a hole of Griggs and force a possible playoff.
But Griggs hit a big wood shot out of the short rough on the left side of the 18th to put her about 55 yards out, then put her next shot on the green.
Swertfeger had a 5-foot putt on the 18th to force a possible extra hole, but it rolled three inches short of the hole.
Also Saturday, Bruce Norman won his first men’s seniors championship, holding on to top Brian Colby 4 and 3.
Norman sank a 5-foot downhill putt on the 15th green to seal the victory.
For his tournament, Norman beat all three other players in the senior’s flight, including a 1-hole victory over two-time champion Eddie Sanchez.
The ACI concludes Sunday with the men’s final. The 27-hole men’s final tees off at 7:30 a.m. when Curt Norman squares off against Parker Ashton.
Ashton, a newcomer to the ACI, rolled into the final with a big win over Warren Finch 8 and 6. Finch, who went into Saturday’s play on a hot streak, couldn’t keep his momentum going against Ashton.
Norman, meanwhile, topped Brett Hollander 3 and 2 to advance. A day earlier, Norman upended two-time defending champion Lee Sanchez to make the semifinal round.
