Parker Ashton held off two-time defending champion Lee Sanchez to win Wednesday's qualifying round of the 2010 Atomic City Invitational.
Ashton, who shot an even par 72 through 18 holes, topped Sanchez in sudden-death playoff, earning a win on the third playoff hole. With his win, Ashton clinches the No. 1 seed heading into Thursday's match play elimination round.
The ACI, Los Alamos Golf Course's signature tournament, is the oldest match play tournament in the state.
The top 15 scores in Wednesday's qualifying round, plus Sanchez, will move on to the championship flight. Thursday's first round is scheduled for an 8 a.m. shotgun start at LAGC.
The cut for the championship flight this year was 82, one of the highest qualifying scores in recent memory. The highest qualifying score in 2009 was 80.
