State meeting to be held at Los Alamos National Bank

Sometimes the best way to move forward is to gather the “troops” and put your heads together to think of new strategies and forge tighter bonds.

United Way of Northern New Mexico is using this philosophy during the upcoming state conference this week.

United Way agencies from throughout New Mexico will attend the conference, which will be held Thursday and Friday in the Los Alamos National Bank boardroom.

During the conference, Donna Schroeder, United Way of Northern New Mexico executive director, said agencies share information about individual fundraising campaigns and discuss common areas of interest and concerns.

She added that the conference is rotated around the different agencies so everyone has the opportunity to show off their particular United Way agency and community.

So what does the local agency have to show off?

“One of our strengths has been that we have a very small staff (one executive director and two part-time employees) but we accomplish so much with our resources,” Schroeder said.

However, the local organization can learn a lot from its fellow agencies.

“We learn when we go to different United Ways,” she said, ‘We see the structures each one has … and we learn so much from each by sharing information and I think that is important because each United Way has a unique market.”

To showcase the market that Los Alamos features, the Chamber of Commerce is putting together information packets for visitors, which include information about restaurants and local events.

“We have never hosted (a conference) here and we want to show off Los Alamos and what’s available here and we hope they may stay for the weekend or come back for a visit,” Schroeder said.
