The United Church of Los Alamos looks ahead to spring break this weekend as it holds its Mexico Mission Auction, starting at 2 p.m. Sunday. The annual event puts funds into church coffers to help build homes for the needy during what is normally a chance to take a break. At press time, 64 builders have signed up to attend the weeklong construction project in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico. Four members of this year’s construction crew are what the team calls “four- year seniors,” meaning these students have spent every spring break since their freshmen year building homes for those less fortunate.Randy and Laura Erickson will board the bus for their 27th build trip. The big number includes a few additional builds with other congregations and a few summer trips.Laura said she enjoys the sense of community that each trip creates within the building team. They become a family. The team gets to know the Mexican families that receive the gift and learn how former families are doing in houses that have become their homes. This year, the auction contains items that are both new and “new to you.” The “new to you” category includes household furniture like televisions, small appliances, couches, shelving units and a desk.
