The Los Alamos Hilltopper ice hockey team remains undefeated heading into this weekend, but has one big game remaining before the holiday break.
Los Alamos, the only undefeated team in the New Mexico Interscholastic Ice Hockey League Standings, will play a team with just one loss, the Cibola Cougars, Friday night. The Hilltoppers and Cougars will face off at the county’s ice rink starting at 8:30 p.m.
The two teams were scheduled to play last weekend, but the snowstorm in the area postponed the game until this weekend.
Heading into the contest, Los Alamos stands at 6-0 while Cibola is 9-1. The winner of Friday’s game will be the No. 1 seed in the upcoming Taos mid-season tournament next month.
In its most recent two games, Los Alamos topped St. Pius X 4-2 at home Dec. 9 then blew out Santa Fe on the road 9-1 Dec. 15.
On the season, Los Alamos has scored 39 goals and allowed 10. Goaltender Zealand Walterscheid has allowed just four goals in 150 minutes and has been credited with 43 saves.
Los Alamos’ defense could be tested against Cibola, however. The Cougars feature the top three scorers in the state, headed by Zach Prigge. Prigge has picked up 20 goals and 14 assists in 8 games, while teammate Graeme Chiasson has 15 goals in 7 games.
