LAPD: After training, they will be certified law enforcement officers

By Whitney Jones

Two new Los Alamos Police Department hires head off to the Law Enforcement Academy in Santa Fe Sunday.

Adele Girmendonk and James Keane will attend the Academy along with 46 other recruits from across the state to get their training in basic law enforcement.

Captain Randy Foster said Girmendonk is the wife of officer Robert Girmendonk and James Keane is a former dispatch employee whose grandfather was a lieutenant at the department.

After 21 weeks of training the recruits will be certified law enforcement officers and will be ready to serve the Los Alamos community.

LAPD has also hired former Española Police Officer and Española School Resource Officer Jack Casias, Foster said.
His first day on the job is Monday.

The department is also undergoing some reorganization with Deputy Chief Kevin Purtymun leading that effort.

He said while the planning phase is still underway he said he’s temporarily moved over two animal control officers to the Los Alamos Detention Center to try and increase the minimum employees’ on-duty to three.

He said before, there were two officers with one monitoring both the floor doing visual checks and inspections as well as booking incoming inmates. And by adding additional staff, those duties can be better divided.
