“True Grit” (2010) — This remake of the classic 1969 John Wayne film is directed by the Coen brothers and tells the tale of a young woman, Mattie Ross (played by Hailee Steinfeld), seeking revenge against her father’s murderer. In an effort to track the alleged killer, Mattie hires a man with “true grit” named Rooster Cogburn (played by Jeff Bridges).
Mattie and Rooster are accompanied by a Texas Ranger, LaBoeuf (played by Matt Damon), whose comical actions add to the film’s humor. The acting done by Steinfeld is superb for a relatively unknown actress. The character she plays is not one of a light spirit and would be difficult to portray for many actresses of such a young age, yet she does a fantastic job and does the role justice.
Jeff Bridges, on the other hand, is a seasoned actor who has had major roles in the films, “Iron Man,” “Tron,” “Crazy Heart,” “The Big Lebowski” and many others. The character Bridges plays is a rough, tough drunkard — not unlike his role in “Crazy Heart,” where he played a drunk musician who was well past his hey-day.
