Jennifer Reglien swam on Bill Hudson’s first Los Alamos High School swimming team in 1955.
Hudson, who usually swims on the Los Alamos Triathlon team, was ordered to take this year off for health reasons, so the team of Inez Ross, and Doug Lier went looking for a swimmer. Reglien volunteered.
The 2008 Los Alamos Triathlon took place Saturday.
Hudson had his doubts that she could swim the required 400 meters after so many years away from the pool, but her shoulders, strong from tossing hay bales and maintaining an active life as a horsewoman were a good base for the month-long training before the event.
Hudson coached her several times, commenting on her style and giving suggestions on form.
Doug Lier, who at 77 did a solo triathlon, contributed his bike portion of the event, and Ross at 77 did the run, so Reglien’s age did not bring the average team age below the 70-year age category where it took the gold medal.
Reglien was thrilled with the success in her first triathlon.
“I feel great, lost weight, and toned muscles I had forgotten about,” she said.
Hudson was also pleased that his own student could replace him and was glad to take some of the credit for her success.
Both plan to take part in next year’s triathlon, so that will mean making up another team.
