Several local multi-sport athletes have been keeping busy during the 2008 season.
A trio of Los Alamos ironman competitors took part in Ford Ironman Arizona at the end of November. Although none of them qualified for the World Ironman Championships, which will be held in October 2009, this won’t be the last chance for those wanting to punch their tickets to Hawaii.
Martin Pieck of Los Alamos was the top finisher at Ironman Arizona, which was held in Tempe.
Pieck, competing in the men’s 40-44 age division, has a total time of 10 hours, 4 minutes, 57 seconds. Pieck finished 26th among 399 entrants in his age group.
Ironman meets consist of 2.4-mile swims, 112-mile bikes and 26.2-mile runs. Pieck had splits of 59:38, 5:12:58 and 3:42:57 in the three events.
In all, 28 athletes from New Mexico finished Ironman Arizona.
Dan Rees was hoping to qualify for his second straight trip to Kona, Hawaii, just a few weeks after participating in the 2008 World Championships.
At Tempe, Rees finished 24th in his age group, men’s 45-49, with his time of 10:24:01.
Rees was attempting to join his wife, Amy Regan, on the trip to Kona.
At the 2008 World Championships, Rees was the No. 2 finisher from New Mexico with his time of 11:17:19.
