Life is just too short not to see Morrie Pongratz dressed as Elvis Presley and this Saturday, you have the chance. Slide on your saddle shoes and tie up trainers because the third annual Fabulous Fifties Family Sock Hop is from 6-10 p.m. Saturday at Fuller Lodge. The fundraiser will benefit the Youth Activity Centers in Los Alamos and White Rock as well as the Los Alamos Family Council’s Counseling Center, both United Way agencies. As statewide budget cuts reduce funding, local nonprofits are compelled to ratchet up fundraising to make ends meet.“The Family Council provides really, really important services in our community,” LAFC board member Barbara Marcille said. “For example, the LAFC Youth Activity Centers are a safe haven and a great social environment for elementary and middle school kids who might otherwise be alone and unsupervised after school. And, the LAFC Counseling Center offers affordable therapy for everything from addictions to relationships to grief to stress.“Unfortunately, both the Youth Activity Center and the Counseling Center services cost more to provide than the income they generate through grants and insurance payments. Even nonprofit organizations have to find ways to make ends meet,” she added. The fundraiser will offer a variety of events including special activities for those with younger kids with the help of Beth Dermer, Bev Aiken and our local Girl Scouts. Additional activities include dance and hula hoop contests as well as bubble blowing contests and more. Guests will also have a chance to win prizes throughout the entire evening from local businesses. The event is intergenerational and brings together the entire community for quality time in a community venue. “It is so much fun to see seniors, teens and toddlers dancing together, and enjoying themselves,” Marcille said. “There just aren’t many venues where all these different age groups interact and have fun doing it.”Another part of the Fabulous Fifties event is a generous donation from Secundino Sandoval. Sandoval’s donation of an original watercolor titled “Endurance,” is a major part of the event with a limited number of raffle tickets available. “It is very generous for such a well-known and respected artist to donate an original painting for this event,” Marcille said. The benefactors of the community event also include Los Alamos National Bank, the Los Alamos Medical Center and the Chamber of Commerce’s MainStreet program. Patrons can purchase of a variety of foods from burgers, fries and root beer floats to Coke in a bottle, and candies from the past. To purchase tickets for the Hop or for the Sandoval raffle, visit Brownell’s Hallmark, the Los Alamos Family Council, at 1505 15th St. or call 662-4160.
