There’s a long-standing tradition in Los Alamos.

Every year, people arrive at Pajarito Mountain ski area with skis and snowboards in hand, dressed in crazy costumes and revved up for some fun.

This tradition is known as Skiesta, and this year will be the 62nd year it has been held.

Skiesta features a little bit of everything. Thad Hahn, one of the event organizers, said there is everything from a variety of ski races to a brewery fest.

Additionally, there will be live music, a costume contest and food.

“I am looking forward to all these great ski events, some of them will be out  in front of the lodge … hopefully we will have people out dancing on the deck, in their costumes (and) drinking a beer,” Hahn said.

There will be a bit of competition as well.

Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female racers in the following categories: kids age 10 and younger, teens age 11-19, adults age 20-44, masters age 45-59 and seniors age 60 and older.

Whether the reason is just for enjoyment or for the competition, Hahn encourages everyone to take part in the festivities.

“Because the ski hill is the community ski hill,  everybody should participate and have fun,” he said.

“Celebrate the great season we’re having.”

Tom Long, general manager of the ski hill, said the ski season this year has been a success so far.

“It’s been a very good one,” he said. “Mother Nature has provided us with plenty of snow … and business has held up well during the ski season.

“Business has been very good,” Long added. “Some of the outside influences like recession and gas prices obviously affect everyone but we have been pleased with our participation.”

He credits the support of the community for the successful season.

Registration for the different events begins at          8 a.m. at the ski lodge.

Also, Atomic City Transit will provide bus services from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. from Sullivan Field to the ski area.

The busses will leave Sullivan Field on the hour.
