The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls track and field teams will again host the District 2AAAA championship meet this season.
The meet will be held Friday and Saturday at Sullivan Field. Field event competition starts at 3 p.m. Friday with running events beginning at 4 p.m.
Los Alamos has hosted the 2AAAA meet every season since 2001, as it is the only school in the district that has been willing or able to host.
Since joining 2AAAA, Los Alamos’ teams have dominated this competition. They have won every district meet since 2001 and have hardly even been challenged for district supremacy during that time.
In 2009, for example, Los Alamos’ girls scored 263 points, 83 more points than the other four district teams put together, while the Hilltopper boys grabbed 223 points, while the other district squads combined managed a total of 217 points.
So far in 2010, the Hilltopper girls have been the top-ranked team in Class AAAA and have not been defeated in any of their eight meets this season — only twice have they failed to win the meet, being defeated by Class 5A Rio Rancho both times.
Los Alamos’ boys got off to a slow start this season but have shown signs of coming around at the right part of the season. Last week, Los Alamos won its home invitational, topping not only district rival Taos, but also Santa Fe, which will join Los Alamos in 2AAAA for the 2011 season.
Hilltopper boys head coach Larry Baca said plenty of volunteers are required to run the two-day meet. He said he was grateful for last week’s volunteers who braved 40-plus mph winds and that this weekend’s weather isn’t forecast to have any such weather.
Those wishing to volunteer should call Los Alamos High School’s athletic office at 663-2531.
