Track and field: LA girls open 2011 with win Saturday

-A A +A

ALBUQUERQUE — In its quest for a third straight Class 4A championship, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team got its season started on the right foot.
The Hilltopper girls picked up a victory in their season-opening meet, the Albuquerque Academy Chile Quad, scoring 98 points to hold off a stiff charge from the St. Pius X Sartans Saturday at Richard Harper Memorial Field.
Also Saturday, Los Alamos’ boys team finished a strong second at the meet, earning 96 points. The Academy Chargers grabbed 118 team points to earn that team victory.
Los Alamos was the only public school at the four-team meet Saturday, with Sandia Prep also taking part.
The Hilltopper girls are the two-time defending state champions in Class 4A, with Academy and St. Pius being among their closest competitors during that run. Saturday, minus their top thrower and two-time defending 100 meter champion Chase Ealey, Los Alamos still earned four event wins, three of them posted by Laura Wendelberger.
Wendelberger, a sophomore who upset teammate Lindsay Benage in a jump-off to win the state high jump title in 2010, won the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump to start her season.
Wendelberger, along with talented newcomer Chelsea Challacombe, an eighth grader, both qualified for state in the high jump with both of them clearing 5 feet.
Los Alamos’ boys, meanwhile, won seven events. Andy Thoma, a newcomer to the track team this season, picked up a state qualifying time in the 400 meters, posting a time of 51.28 to earn that victory.
Also Saturday, Kory Balog won and qualified for the state meet in the javelin with his throw of 158 feet, 8 inches.
The Hilltoppers will be transitioning somewhat in 2011. Larry Baca, the longtime head coach of boys track at Los Alamos, is not in the infield this season. Instead, Rob Hipwood, the veteran head coach of the Hilltopper cross country team, will head the boys track team this season. Hipwood, one of the most respected cross country coaches in the state, is also a longtime assistant track coach.
Baca, who retired from his teaching position following the 2009-10 school year, said he would come back to coach Los Alamos this season if he could, but said he would probably have to sit out at least one year per regulations regarding retiring public school employees.
Los Alamos’ boys were celebrating at least one returner Saturday, however. Kyle Stephens, who has suffered injuries and health problems for most of the school year, made his return to competition count Saturday, winning the 100 meters and leading off the victorious and state-qualifying 800 relay team — anchor leg Graham Delano made up for three horrendous handoffs, coming back from about a second and a half down to prevail over the team from Academy.
After his win in the 100, Stephens said he was about 90 percent full strength and was hoping to start lifting weights again by the middle of the month.
“It feels good to be back,” Stephens said. “Going through a lot of injuries like that, it feels good to have success in competition again.”
On the girls’ side, Victoria Honnell won the 800 meters in convincing fashion, while Emily Pittman’s big kick late netted her second place in the 1,600 meters.
