ALBUQUERQUE — In its quest for a third straight Class 4A championship, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls track and field team got its season started on the right foot.
The Hilltopper girls picked up a victory in their season-opening meet, the Albuquerque Academy Chile Quad, scoring 98 points to hold off a stiff charge from the St. Pius X Sartans Saturday at Richard Harper Memorial Field.
Also Saturday, Los Alamos’ boys team finished a strong second at the meet, earning 96 points. The Academy Chargers grabbed 118 team points to earn that team victory.
Los Alamos was the only public school at the four-team meet Saturday, with Sandia Prep also taking part.
The Hilltopper girls are the two-time defending state champions in Class 4A, with Academy and St. Pius being among their closest competitors during that run. Saturday, minus their top thrower and two-time defending 100 meter champion Chase Ealey, Los Alamos still earned four event wins, three of them posted by Laura Wendelberger.
Wendelberger, a sophomore who upset teammate Lindsay Benage in a jump-off to win the state high jump title in 2010, won the 100-meter hurdles, high jump and long jump to start her season.
