-A A +A

The Los Alamos Middle School track and field teams ended their spring season  with a meet at West Las Vegas.
All four Hawks teams placed in the top four of their divisions. The seventh grade girls won the team competition handily, scoring 146 points, the eighth grade boys also won with a team score of 107, the seventh grade boys finished in 4th place with  53.5 points, the eighth grade girls finished in second place with 107 points.
The seventh grade girls team was dominant during the 2011 season. After placing third at the first meet in March, it went undefeated in the remaining four meets, scoring 100-150 points in each meet.
Several school records were broken by the Hawks teams over the course of the season.
Among those LAMS athletes to break records, eighth grader Alexi Ortega broke the 400 meter record with a time of 55.28, coming in more than half a second under the previous record set in 2002.
Ortega’s teammate, Jonathan Schueler ended the year with a 117-foot, 5-inch throw in discus to improve the school record by almost seven feet, a record set in 2007. Also for the Hawks, Jonmichael Weaver posted a time of 20.35 in the eighth grade boys 110 meter hurdles, setting a new standard for 33-inch hurdles — 2011 was the first year 33-inch hurdles were used.
