Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls swimming teams picked up big victories at this weekend’s District 1 championship meet.
Los Alamos’ boys scored 421.5 points to earn the win at the district meet, held at the Larry R. Walkup Aquatic Center, while the Hilltopper girls finished with a total of 421 points.
Taos finished second in the girls competition with 315.5 points, while St. Michael’s boys finished as the meet runner-up with 321 points.
The Hilltopper teams will now advance to the state championship meet, which starts Friday and continues through Saturday. This weekend, the Hilltopper swimmers and divers picked up 17 more state qualifying marks, nine of those coming on the boys side.
Los Alamos also set four new district championship meet records this weekend. Among the new records are Sydney Schoonover in the 50-yard freestyle, and all three of the girls relay squads.
It was a big meet for Schoonover, who not only set a new 50 freestyle mark and qualified for state in that event, but also qualified in the 100 freestyle.
Also for the Hilltopper girls, Jessie Zhao earned state qualifying marks in those same events.
Connor Schultz got qualifying marks in both the 100 and 200 freestyle, while Sam Harris also got two more marks of his own, in the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.
More information on the District 1 meet will appear in the Los Alamos Monitor later this week.
