The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team was thumped by the St. Pius X Sartans Thursday afternoon in Albuquerque.
After taking a 2-0 edge after one half, the Sartans scored three times — twice in a seven-minute span — in the second half to top the Hilltoppers 5-0 at Sartan Field.
Thursday’s contest was a nondistrict affair between the former district rivals. St. Pius left 2-4A after the 2006 season, never having lost a district game since joining the district in 2000.
St. Pius got off 15 shots-on-goal to Los Alamos’ three, all of which were scooped up by St. Pius’ Timothy Lang.
Los Alamos, the defending Class 4A champion, defeated St. Pius in the semifinals of its 2010 state title run.
This season, however, Los Alamos has posted just a 4-6 record against Class 4A teams. Those losses include shutouts at the hands of Farmington and Albuquerque Academy along with Thursday’s shutout loss. The Sartans have shut out six opponents in 2011.
The loss at St. Pius (11-5) will likely drop the Hilltoppers (7-9) out of the coveted top four seeds when playoff brackets are announced later this month — it’s unlikely Los Alamos would miss out on the playoffs even if it was to be upset by Capital for the District 2-4A title — having now lost to four ranked Class 4A opponents. Of course, Los Alamos won the 2010 title as a No. 5 seed in the playoffs.
For the Sartans, forward Xavier Sanchez finished with a goal and an assist.
Los Alamos will continue its 2-4A season Saturday when it faces Bernalillo.
Los Alamos beat Bernalillo 4-1 at Sullivan Field Sept. 20.
