The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team picked up an important win on the road Saturday afternoon.
Los Alamos came back from a 3-point halftime deficit to grab a 29-25 victory over the Albuquerque Academy Chargers at Richard Harper Memorial Field in Albuquerque.
Quarterback Brice Van Etten found Xavier Dennison open in the middle of the field for a 49-yard touchdown with about six minutes remaining Saturday.
The long score gave the Hilltoppers a 29-19 edge. The Chargers (3-3) would score a touchdown with under four minutes to go but Los Alamos picked up two big first downs on its ensuing drive to kill the clock.
Saturday was Academy’s homecoming contest, but the host Chargers lost their second straight game to the Hilltoppers. The Hilltoppers beat the Chargers at Sullivan Field for their 2011 homecoming game.
A loss by the Hilltoppers, who evened their season record at 3-3, would’ve likely cost them any stab at an at-large invitation to the Class 4A playoffs this year, should they need to go that route.
The fourth quarter touchdown was the second long score of the game for Dennison, who ran 46 yards to paydirt to give Los Alamos an 8-0 lead early in the fourth quarter.
