The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team downed the Las Vegas Robertson Cardinals in a dual contest Tuesday at home.
Los Alamos took four of six singles contests and swept the doubles contests against the Class 3A Cardinals to win 7-2.
Tuesday’s win comes on the heels of Los Alamos’ appearance at the Cheyenne Mountain Invitational in Colorado Springs, Colo., last weekend.
Colleen Fitzsimmons picked up a solid victory over Victoria Gomez in No. 2 singles and teamed up with Hannah Cunningham to trip up Robertson’s team of Kristen Herrera/Erika Baca in straight sets.
Astrid Hengartner, Jing Xie and Bridget Daughton were also winners for the Hilltoppers in singles competition Tuesday.
Last weekend, the Hilltoppers placed a pair of doubles teams into the top four at the Cheyenne Mountain tournament. Los Alamos was the only team from New Mexico taking part.
The Hilltoppers’ Nos. 1 and 3 doubles teams picked up first round wins at Cheyenne Mountain. Emily Funsten/Gwynn Cunningham, playing at No. 1 for the Hilltoppers, earned a 6-0, 6-3 win over Air Academy’s Maggie Juran/Cheyenne Pugin to open but couldn’t keep its momentum up, losing two straight contests after that.
At No. 3 doubles, Susanna Lucido and Andrea Hengartner picked up a first round win over Cherry Creek’s Mariah Smith/Mia Hoover, taking a tough 7-6, 5-7, 8-6 win to advance in the championship bracket. Lucido/Hengartner dropped its semifinal and third-place matches to finish fourth.
In singles competition this weekend, Gillian Hsieh-Ratliff bounced back from a first-round loss to finish third at the No. 2 slot. Hsieh-Ratliff topped Andrea Motley of Fossil Ridge, 6-4, 6-0, then swept Loren Koszowski of St. Mary’s Academy 6-4, 6-2 to finish fifth in that draw.
Madeline Margevicius finished seventh at No. 1, winning her final match against Kaitlyn Motley of Fossil Ridge, 6-3, 6-3. Fitzsimmons was sixth at No. 3 singles going 1-2 in the draw, topping Claire Chrisman of St. Mary’s in the consolation semifinals.
Katie Hemphill and doubles partner Nasim Andrews finished fifth in the No. 4 doubles draw, while Laura Whicker/Hannah Cunningham finished seventh at No. 2 doubles.
