ALBUQUERQUE – In many respects, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team had a good outing Wednesday morning against the Albuquerque Academy Chargers.
However, the one aspect it didn’t have would ultimately cost the team the contest.
Los Alamos, by many statistical measures, played well enough to top favored Albuquerque Academy, but some costly turnovers in the second quarter would come back to haunt it in the endgame.
The Hilltoppers and Chargers met in Wednesday morning’s Class AAAA quarterfinal round, the fourth straight time the Hilltoppers had made that particular game, losing the previous three of those as well.
While the Hilltoppers had a solid shooting night, connecting on 47 percent of their chances from the floor, the Chargers’ 7 forced turnovers in that second quarter would ultimately be the difference. The Chargers would go on to score 8 points directly off those turnovers and won the game by 9 points, 56-47.
Albuquerque Academy, which was ranked third for most of the season behind Roswell, the top seed in the tournament, and Española Valley, the second seed in the tournament, will meet the Sundevils in tonight’s Class AAAA semifinal. Roswell and Volcano Vista met in the other semifinal.
