Girls soccer is No. 1 in state
The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls soccer team tops the first Class 4A rankings of the season released by NMSoccer.com.
The Hilltoppers earned a rating of .76, one of only four teams in Class 4A to earn a rating in positive territory, to claim the top spot this week. The statewide polls were released Tuesday. This was the first week MaxPreps polls were broken down by classification.
Los Alamos (9-1) opened District 2-4A play with a big win over the Bernalillo Spartans Wednesday, 11-0. The Hilltoppers have won six straight contests.
In the website’s national rankings, Los Alamos finished 82nd overall. Los Alamos finished as high as No. 25 among the nation’s girls soccer programs.
Finishing right behind Los Alamos in the 4A rankings was Aztec, which with 12 wins is the winningest team in the state. Albuquerque Academy (7-3) finished third in the poll, followed by Piedra Vista (7-3) and St. Pius X (7-4), the only team to have defeated Los Alamos this season.
LA football is No. 13 in 4A
The Hilltopper football team picked up two spots in the MaxPreps.com football rankings this week.
Following its big 34-0 homecoming win over the Kirtland Central Broncos, the Hilltoppers finished as the No. 13 team in Class 4A, up from the No. 15 spot where it had been since the preseason.
By virtue of Friday’s loss, the Kirtland Central Broncos tumbled to No. 21 out of 25 Class 4A teams.
Los Alamos (2-2), which is 2-0 at home, will face a big test Friday night. It will host the Belen Eagles (3-1), whose only loss came this past weekend at the hands of the top team in 4A, the Goddard Rockets.
Goddard, Los Lunas, Artesia and Piedra Vista, the four remaining undefeated teams in the state, took the top four slots in this week’s poll.
