SANTA FE — Facing its toughest challenge to the District 2-4A title yet, the Los Alamos Hilltopper girls tennis team went 4-for-4 in the matches it needed to win Saturday.
Los Alamos’ Nos. 3-6 singles, Hannah Cunningham, Astrid Hengartner, Lauryn Anaya and Lauren Fugate swept their matches, with Cunningham and Fugate both going into three sets, to knock off the Santa Fe Demons 5-4 and earn the district title Saturday.
The Hilltoppers trailed 2-1 after the doubles contests and had to more-or-less concede the Nos. 1-2 singles matches to the Demons, who posed the biggest threat to the Hilltoppers’ reign over 2-4A since 2000.
But Hengartner and Anaya won convincingly, Fugate held on after dropping a tight second set to win the final set 6-3 over Krystl Debrun, and Cunningham had to bounce back after being roughed up in the first set by Santa Fe’s Dakota Haraden to win 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.
“I’ve played her twice before. One time I won, one time she won,” said Cunningham after her big win. “I knew I could beat her. And my team is really supportive. That was really nice.”
Los Alamos earned its 15th consecutive district title with the upset win. More information on Saturday's win will be in Tuesday’s Los Alamos Monitor.
