Late homers by Memphis sink Albuquerque

A pair of late, back-to-back home runs sunk the Albuquerque Isotopes in their series opener against Memphis.
Albuquerque got an excellent starting pitching performance from John Ely through six innings, but Ely ran out of gas in the seventh. Ely, who had retired the previous nine hitters, Mark Hamilton and Zack Cox homered on consecutive pitches to lead off the bottom of the seventh.
Memphis’ Redbirds hung on to win Wednesday’s series opener 3-2 at Memphis.
The loss for the Isotopes shaved their lead in the PCL American Southern division down to just half a game as the Oklahoma City RedHawks (45-34) won 10-6 at Iowa Wednesday.
For the Isotopes, it was just their second loss in nine outings and was just the second time they’d been held to under four runs since June 17.
Ely (8-5) gave up just five hits, including three solo home runs, and struck out nine hitters. Jess Todd (1-1) gave up one run in two innings to pick up the win after Shelby Miller left after five innings for Memphis.
All the runs in the game were scored on solo homers.
The Isotopes (46-34) got just three hits on the night, including solo shots by Matt Angle and Jerry Sands.
