Round Rock takes series finale over Albuquerque
The Round Rock Express pounded out 15 hits against the Albuquerque Isotopes to pick up a series win Wednesday night in Albuquerque.
Despite coming up with 15 hits, Round Rock was able to cash in just five runs. That was good enough, however, as Round Rock earned a 5-2 victory at Isotopes Park.
Albuquerque got single tallies in the third and fourth innings, the second of which tied the score at 2-2, but Round Rock scored twice in the seventh and pushed an insurance run across in the eighth to win.
Fernando Nieve (3-4) was knocked around in his six-plus innings of work, giving up 10 hits. Nieve, however, limited the Express to just three earned runs. He was pulled after failing to retire the first three batters he faced in the seventh.
Round Rock left fielder Ryan Spilborghs went 3-for-5 with a seventh inning triple to break the tie score.
Even with Round Rock at the bottom of the PCL American Southern standings, the Isotopes have only gone 4-5 against the Express this month.
The Isotopes won the first game of the series against the Express, but Wednesday’s win by the Express not only gave them the series win — the teams split four games in Texas earlier this month — but cost the Isotopes a chance to make up ground against division leader Oklahoma City, which lost to New Orleans Wednesday.
Albuquerque has a quick four-game set on the road this weekend at Iowa before returning to Isotopes Park for eight games against New Orleans and Nashville. Albuquerque faces Iowa at 6:05 p.m.
