Isotopes win, end four-game slide
The Albuquerque Isotopes snapped a four-game skid with a win in the third game of their series at Round Rock, Texas, Monday.
Albuquerque jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings and held Round Rock’s Express scoreless until the bottom of the ninth. Albuquerque starting pitcher Stephen Fife (5-4) threw seven innings of shutout ball and struck out four to earn the victory.
Fife threw 62 of 93 pitches on the night for strikes. He gave up just four hits and walked only one batter.
The Isotopes, who have been quite streaky in 2012, had lost five of their previous six games after winning three straight. Prior to their losing streak, the Isotopes were atop the PCL American Southern standings, but their skid, combined with a seven-game win streak by the Oklahoma City RedHawks, have the Isotopes sitting 3-1/2 games back of the division-leading RedHawks.
Round Rock (27-32) is currently in the division basement, 8-1/2 games off the RedHawks’ pace, but defeated Albuquerque 3-2 in the series opener and 7-3 Sunday.
Monday, Albuquerque (32-27) got a run-scoring single from Josh Bard in the second and a two-run single from Jeff Baisley in the third to take the early lead. Brian Cavazos-Valdez tripled and scored in the sixth and Jerry Sands doubled and scored on Josh Fields’ base hit in the ninth.
Matt Angle was 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Cavazos-Valdez also went 2-for-4.
Round Rock’s Martin Perez (3-5) took the loss, giving up three earned runs in six innings.
Following tonight’s series finale at Round Rock, the Isotopes will have a travel day Wednesday and begin a seven-game homestand Thursday night versus Memphis.
