Tito Puente, Jr. is determined to preserve the legacy of his father, the “King of Latin Music.”
To this end, Puente, Jr., a talented performer in his own right, has most recently connected with Pacific Mambo Orchestra.
The Latin Big Band ensemble and Puente, Jr. take the stage 8 p.m. Friday at Popejoy Hall.
After studying music and composition, Puente, Jr. joined a heavy metal band. But it wasn’t long before he returned to his roots and dabbled in different Latin music groups. Puente, Jr. has spent the last five years reverently paying tribute to his late father’s music, effectively making himself an audience favorite worldwide.
In 2004, Puente, Jr. released an album “En Los Pasos de Mi Padre,” or “In My Father’s Shoes,” which featured renditions of his father’s classics.
This album became the basis for a BET Jazz television special.
Most recently, he appeared as a musical guest on the hit television series “Dancing With The Stars.” His father’s fan base has enthusiastically embraced Puente, Jr. for his faithful renditions of Puente Sr.’s work, delivered with charisma and skill.
Both Puente, Jr. and Grammy-Award winner Marlow Rosado join Pacific Mambo Orchestra for its 2013 tour.
