AZTEC – In the Four Corners area Friday night, it was all Aztec Tigers all the time. Or, more accurately, it was all Aztec half of the time.
The Los Alamos Hilltopper football team was thumped on the road Friday night against the Aztec Tigers. The Tigers scored six times – including four times in a span of 1 minute, 41 seconds – in the first quarter to go up 40-0, then closed out the contest at halftime, winning 60-0 at Fred Cook Memorial Stadium.
Aztec quarterback Adam Lucero threw two touchdown passes in the first quarter, including a 74-yarder to Josh Martinez with :07 seconds left to give the Tigers a whopping advantage after just 12 minutes of play, and ran for a third touchdown from 6 yards out. Aztec also scored two defensive touchdowns in the first quarter and another in the second.
It was the second lopsided loss for the Hilltoppers (0-2) to start the season. They were topped 59-22 in the previous week’s season opener at Pojoaque.
Bryce Grady of Aztec scored three times in the first quarter as well Friday. Grady caught a 41-yard scoring pass from Lucero at the 8:36 mark to open the scoring, then scored two of Aztec’s three touchdowns coming within a matter of 44 seconds, recovering a fumble and running it back 20 yards, then diving into the end zone from a yard out just 36 seconds later.
