A pair of Class 4A teams were big winners in the opening night of prep football in New Mexico.
High school football got going with four games Thursday night, including a pair of nail-biters pitting two of the top teams in the southern part of the state going up against opponents from El Paso, Texas.
Las Cruces Mayfield edged El Paso Chapin 28-27 to open its season, while the Las Cruces Bulldawgs were nipped by El Paso El Dorado, 26-23.
In the other two games Thursday, Atrisco Heritage, which plays in District 5-4A, pounded Class 5A’s Albuquerque High 37-0 to open its season, while Valencia, from District 6-4A, crushed Taos 68-18.
