A trio of Los Alamos Hilltopper spring sports stars were invited to play in the New Mexico High School Coaches Association’s All-Star contests this summer.
Hilltoppers Hannah Cunningham, Jake Downs and Kiana Zerr will all take part in the events.
All-Star series participants must be graduating seniors from around the state. Selection is done by the NMHSCA.
Cunningham was part of the Hilltopper girls tennis team in 2014. She and doubles partner Astrid Hengartner finished as the runners-up in District 2-4A and advanced to the state Class 4A tournament before falling in the quarterfinal round.
Along with that finish, Cunningham also helped Los Alamos hold off Santa Fe for the team district title. Los Alamos had never lost in district competition but was the underdog heading into this year’s tournament.
The Hilltoppers ultimately advanced to the state 4A semifinals before losing to eventual champion Farmington.
The All-Star tennis series is scheduled for July 28-29. The North All-Stars, which also include Juliana Guerin of Las Vegas Robertson, Caroline Moss of Farmington and Greta Miller of Santa Fe, will not only take on the South All-Stars but also combine with the boys North All-Stars for a round of mixed doubles competition.
The North team will be coached by Juan Carols Fulgenzi of Robertson.
Zerr will represent the North All-Stars at the Class 4A-5A softball series, which is scheduled for June 6-7 in Farmington.
Zerr, who was among the team leaders in most major offensive categories this season, as well as having a big chunk of the pitching duties, helped the Hilltoppers claim the runner-up spot in district and advance to the Class 4A playoffs.
She is one of two representatives taken from the district, the other being Demi Madalena of Bernalillo, one of the most dominant pitchers in the state. Also scheduled to appear at the series are Danielle Ortiz and Tabor Woosley of 4A champion Piedra Vista and Kaitlyn Archibeque of St. Pius X.
Downs, meanwhile, was invited to take part on the North big-school baseball team. Downs has been a staple toward the top of the order for Los Alamos each of the past two seasons — he had a big year hitting out of the No. 2 spot for much of this season.
Downs and the rest of the Hilltoppers claimed their sixth consecutive 2-4A title in 2014 and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the state tournament.
The 4A-5A All-Star series will be played June 13-14 in Las Cruces.
