On behalf of the Los Alamos High School Science Department, we want to thank the Los Alamos community for their overwhelming generosity to a person who is very special to us. We hosted a fundraiser for fellow science teacher, Dave Thurston, who is battling leukemia and in need of financial assistance because his health insurance does not cover all the costs associated with his treatment.
The community response was overwhelming. Community members donated about 200 beautiful baskets for a silent auction. Every business in town that we approached made a donation. Smith’s gave us a discount on the food for the Frito pie dinner. CB Fox, Central Avenue Grill, Cooking in Style, Decadent Table, Otowi Station, PEEC, Pajarito Mountain Ski Association, Pet Pangea, Ruby K’s, Santa Fe Properties, Tea World, the YMCA and many others donated baskets. About 1,000 people attended and contributed to the fundraiser.
So many people helped to make the dinner and auction successful. We want to thank Jaime Kephart, John Pawlak, Morrie Pongratz, and KRSN radio for spreading the word about the fundraiser. We want to thank the Los Alamos Hockey Association for their support. The hockey players set up tables, heated chili, and chopped vegetables. The LAHS Key Club did a wonderful job serving Frito pies, collecting money, and setting up the auction. We want to thank all the people who cooked chili, baked cookies, put together baskets, made donations and bid on baskets. Thank you, Eva Pacheco, for collecting the baskets. And thank you, Principal Grace Brown, for your generous contributions.
We are so fortunate to live in this big-hearted community. The community donated over $15,000, which will help cover medical expenses for Dave and help fund the search of the national registry for a bone marrow match.
