Garden party

Added up together, there were more than 1,000 garden visits at the recent Los Alamos Gardeners’ Tour. The Garden Tour committee thanks the garden owners, Bev and Martin Cooper, Russell and Marion Pack, Steve Foltyn, the Steve Storms family, Robert and Mary McQuinn, Earl and Linda Hoffman and Pat Walls, for opening their gardens for the day.

We thank all the master gardeners for their hard work in preparing the demonstration garden. The Master Gardener docents and volunteers did a fabulous job in ushering the visitors around the gardens and answering questions. The county extension agent, Carlos Valdez and his office staff provided much needed support. We thank the Los Alamos National Bank for sponsoring advertisement, and we thank the Los Alamos Monitor for running an article alerting the community to the event. Most important, we thank the members of the community who came with questions and left with ideas to implement in their own landscapes.

Who stole

the cookies?

Los Alamos artists and businesses provided generous support to the Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails gala Cookie Caper fundraiser in April. The Cookie Caper raised funds to support Girl Scout programs, scholarships for girls and adult leadership training. Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails serves 5,000 girls aged 6-18 and 2,600 adults.

The Girl Scouts of northern New Mexico have hosted Cookie Capers since 1996 and Los Alamos has always helped us out in a big way.

The Cookie Caper event showcases the talent of northern New Mexico ceramic and glass artists who create and donate cookie jars and platters, which are offered at silent auction. Local artists Thelma Hahn, Marc Hudson and Barbara Yarnell participated this year. Yarnell’s beautiful piece received second place in the art judging and was voted People’s Choice.

Eleven Cookie Caper Chefs from Santa Fe, Cochiti and Albuquerque created original desserts using Girl Scout Cookies as a prime ingredient. These desserts were available for tasting by those in attendance.

Antonio Sena from the Santa Fe Country Club won first place; Leonard Trejo and Cynthia Cordova of Garbo’s @ Rainbow Vision placed second and were voted People’s Choice; and Kaitlin Ojeda of Encantado placed third. Good food and good fun for a good cause.

Los Alamos National Bank gave a generous donation to sponsor the 2010 Cookie Caper. CB Fox provided merchandise for the silent auction, as did Fun Phonics/Sizzy Books, Monica’s Salon and Silpada Jewelry representative Agnes Finn.

Jewelry designers Kathy Hjeresen, Lee Griffin and Carole Oldenborg donated beautiful necklaces, bracelets and earrings. The Hill Diner donated a gift certificate for their famous Banana Cream Pie.

This year’s Cookie Caper took place April 9 at Bishop’s Lodge in Santa Fe.

The planning committee included Carole Oldenborg, Antoinette Sheffield and Nina Thayer of Los Alamos. In addition, Los Alamos Girl Scout adults volunteered at the event.

Thank you, Dee Morrison, Linda Hull, Cori Grider, Cheryl Royer and Beth Pattillo.

The Girl Scouts of New Mexico Trails will soon begin planning the 15th edition of this popular event for 2011.
