SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Republican Gov.-elect Susana Martinez has selected Texas social worker Yolanda Berumen-Deines to become secretary of the Children, Youth and Families Department.
A senior aide to Martinez says Berumen-Deines is being nominated to run the agency that operates New Mexico's juvenile justice system.
The aide spoke on condition of anonymity because Martinez plans to make the announcement later Tuesday.
Berumen-Deines is a social worker in El Paso. She worked for the El Paso Center for Children as director of training for its healthy marriages initiative from April 2007 until last March.
Her nomination is subject to confirmation by the state Senate.
The department provides services for children and families, including foster care, and it investigates reports of child abuse and neglect.
