Matt Whicker took top honors in the men’s singles draw and half the top honor in the men’s doubles draw at this weekend’s Los Alamos Tennis Club Tournament.

The tournament was held Saturday and Sunday at Urban Park. It included players from all across northern New Mexico, some coming as far away as Moriarty and Rio Rancho.

Whicker took a three-set victory in the men’s final, coming back from a set down against Kent Brown. Brown took the opening set 6-3, but Whicker swept the final two sets to take the title, 6-3, 6-3.

This weekend’s tournament included a men’s top flight, a men’s B flight, a men’s Over 50 flight, a men’s doubles draw and two mixed doubles draws.

In the men’s B singles flight, Jason Grider topped Mike Fitzsimmons to win. Grider took a 6-0 victory in the first set, then held on to win the second set 7-5.

Giri Raichur won the men’s Over 50 draw, taking a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jeff Whicker.

In the men’s top doubles flight, Matt Whicker and partner Stephen Townsley rolled to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over the team Bob Tonelli/Tony Ballard.

Joel Williams/Elizabeth Keating won the mixed doubles title by beating Jim Harris/Lee Harris in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5.

Grider and Jeff Abes were the winners in the mixed B doubles flight. The duo topped Yu Seung Kim/Tuson Park in that final, 6-3, 7-5.
