SANTA FE — There wasn’t much left to chance this weekend. Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls tennis teams took part in the pre-District 2AAAA tournament Friday and Saturday hoping to leave no doubt as to which teams would get the top seeding in the 2AAAA championship tournament in two weeks. And the Hilltoppers came through in impressive fashion. Both teams soundly defeated the Española Valley Sundevils at home Friday and both scored impressive wins over Capital and Taos Saturday at Capital’s home courts. The seeding meeting will be held a week from today, but no other squads accomplished anything close to what Los Alamos accomplished this weekend.Top to bottom, both the Hilltopper lineups looked solid throughout pre-district play.“I’m very happy with the way I played and the way our team played,” Hilltopper Jason Grider said following the two sweeps Saturday. “Overall, it was a great day of tennis.”Against Española Valley, Los Alamos’ boys won an 8-1 decision, running into little trouble most of the way. The story was the same throughout Saturday’s play, with the ‘Toppers going onto blank Capital and Taos 9-0.Los Alamos shut out Española Valley in at least one set in five of the six singles matches, and lost just one of the three double matches after the dual had been decided. The lone Hilltopper who found himself in trouble Friday was No. 1 single Patrick Raichur, who was down three breaks to the Sundevils’ No. 1 Ryan Martinez in the first set.Raichur, who was determined to get his big hitting down against Martinez, double-faulted several times during his first three service games and missed some other big forehands long. There wasn’t much reason to panic, though, even after Raichur fell behind 4-1. Raichur reeled off five straight games to take the first set, then played an efficient second set to win 6-4, 6-2.Raichur and Jeena Kim, the No. for the Hilltopper girls, both had big wins in the pre-district finale against Taos. Raichur upended Garret Cottam in straight sets while just across the way at the same time, Kim took a straight-set win over Taos’ Erica Dimond. The wins were significant because both players had lost straight-set decisions to their Taos counterparts Tuesday when the two teams met in Los Alamos. It was the first win for Kim over Dimond in three tries, but following the 6-2, 6-2 decision, Kim gave some of the credit to Raichur, who worked out with her prior to the match with Dimond.“That really helped a lot,” Kim said. “I played aggressive and I tried not to get nervous.”As a team Saturday, the Hilltopper girls were largely untroubled against Capital. Without even playing their top lineup, the ‘Toppers didn’t drop a single set in the 9-0 sweep.No. 1 Chelsy Smith, No. 3 Desta Shelley and No. 4 Sarah Worland lost only one game between the three of them against the Jaguars. Smith won a pair of singles matches in straight sets Saturday, the only ‘Topper to play two singles matches.Grider, for the Hilltopper boys, blanked Adrian Barela of Capital to get his Saturday rolling, then he and Chase Havemann topped Eric Christian/John Laycock at No. 3 doubles in the Taos dual.“I thought our service game did really well,” Grider said of he and Havemann’s doubles win. “Our return-serve wasn’t as good, but our serves, that’s what really put us over the top.”
