The men’s and women’s finals of the Los Alamos Tennis Club’s tournament are scheduled for this morning at Urban Park.
The two-day tournament will conclude today with the final round in the singles and doubles brackets. The men’s final, which pits Andrei Vakhtin against Billy Wilton, will start at 9 a.m., while the women’s final, in which Warapa Prime will take on Lynne Higdon, is set for a 9:30 a.m. start. Other matches will start at various times today.
In the men’s singles draw, Vakhtin upended 2009 tournament runner-up Kent Brown in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 in Saturday afternoon’s semifinal to advance to the championship round.
To win the 2010 tournament, Vakhtin will have to get through both Wilton brothers. Vakhtin topped Lloyd Wilton in straight sets during the men’s first round to get to the semifinal.
Billy Wilton held off Stephen Townsley in Saturday’s other men’s semifinal at the tournament, taking that match 7-5, 6-3. Wilton grabbed a 6-2, 6-0 decision over Mike Fitzsimmons to open the tournament.
Matt Whicker, the 2009 singles champion, is nursing an injury and elected not to play in the men’s top draw this year, but will have a chance to again be half of the tournament’s top doubles team.
He and father Jeff Whicker advanced to the men’s doubles final Saturday. Whicker/Whicker went down to the wire with Devon Engleman/Joel Williams in the men’s double’s semifinal. The two teams split the first two sets, but Whicker/Whicker earned a 10-5 tiebreaker victory.
The Whickers will meet Lloyd Wilton/Townsley in this morning’s final. Wilton/Townsley topped Brown/Bob Tonelli 7-6 (5), 6-1 in the other semifinal.
In the women’s singles draw, Prime picked up a pair of straight-set victories Saturday to get to this morning’s final. Prime dropped Robyn Martinez 6-1, 6-0 in her opener, then swept Marvell Harrison 6-2, 6-4.
On the other side of the women’s bracket, Higdon held off a second-set charge from Adrianna Espinoza, winning 6-2, 7-5 to advance.
In the top mixed doubles flight, Joel Williams/Alison Walters will take on Harrison/Tom Csandi in today’s final. Both teams were straight-set winners in Saturday’s semifinal.
