The Los Alamos Tennis Club will once again be hosting its championship tournament this weekend.
LATC’s tournament, which is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Urban Park, is expecting 40 participants this year for its men’s and women’s draws.
Saturday’s play starts at 8 a.m.
Tournament director Bob Tonelli said most of the participants in the men’s side are from Los Alamos but the women’s side will have several out-of-town competitors included.
In 2009, Matt Whicker won both the men’s singles title and, with doubles partner Stephen Townsley, took the men’s doubles title as well.
This year, however, Whicker has been battling a nagging injury and isn’t expected to participate in the men’s singles tournament. He is scheduled, however, to take part in the doubles tournament.
Townsley is slated to take part in both the singles and doubles tournaments.
Kent Brown, the 2009 runner-up at this tournament, is set to return this year.
Brown and Whicker went down to the wire in the men’s A final last year. Brown topped Whicker 6-3 in the opening set, but Whicker fought back to take the final two sets, 6-3, 6-3.
This year, Billy and Lloyd Wilton, two former Los Alamos High School standouts and collegiate players, are in the men’s draw.
Tonelli said a pavilion has been set up this year and LATC will host a barbecue during the tournament.
